Scottish Hockey History

Internationals, Districts and Clubs

The Scottish Hockey Heritage Group (SHHG) intends to :

a) To identify and preserve Scotland’s Hockey Heritage, working closely with Scottish Hockey, clubs, districts and individuals (or their families) who have collections or reminiscences

b) To develop and maintain a digital archive of Scottish Hockey history

c) To publicise the archive through the SHHG social media platforms and signpost links to other archives

d) Share the stories of Scottish Hockey

Here are the current members of the SHHG who coordinate the existing workstreams and want to identify other volunteers who would be interested in getting involved, particularly getting individuals involved across all the Scottish Hockey Districts

Outside of hockey, George is a graduate of the Royal Dick Veterinary College and retired in 2024 after 40+ years in general practice.

Since retirement George is a volunteer at the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders museum and also helps run the Friends of Western HC group.  He is a keen amateur historian with particular interest in local history and the history of The Great War.

George initially became involved with the Scottish Hockey Heritage Group while researching “Lest We Forget” a memorial to the Scottish International players who died in both World wars. His current research topics are “Early Hockey Families” and helping The Hockey Museum find relatives of early GB caps.

Gordon Black

Gordon started playing hockey at school around 2004 and soon joined Helensburgh Hockey Club. He has played at Helensburgh for his whole hockey career.

This lead to Gordon joining of the committee at Helensburgh taking on various roles and is now Club Captain. He also joined the West District as Outdoor league convenor in 2017 and has held the post since then.

Approaching the 2014-15 season, George noted the Helensburgh was approaching 40 years as a club. This sparked his keen interest in the stats and history of the club, and began researching all he could from newspaper articles, to old minute books etc.

When he joined the West District, he had similar ideas, and began collating a history of the district. All that has lead George to the Scottish Hockey Heritage Group, and now keen to explore what else he can discover!
